In fact Behramkale (Assos) is one of the villages of the township of Ayvacık. However, Assos is better known as a popular tourism centre than Ayvacık. Let's give Behramkale its fair due, it is a beautiful place with a nice hotel on the second floor and a restaurant below at the port area but one should not be stuck in one place since the surroundings are so nice. The information on the foundation of the town relies on local beliefs. However, the fact the region goes far back in history is agreed on by information garnered from the ancient histories. The 78 kilometres of coast starting from Babakale to Küçükkuyu is associated to the township of Ayvacık.
The ancient city of Lamponia This ancient city was very close to the port of Assos and, by studying the remains found so far, it was estimated to have been built in the 5th Century AD.This is site overlooks the Gulf of Edremit and some of the city walls are still standing.
Kadırga Cove When you follow the seaside road from Assos for two kilometres to the east you come to a cove that has not as yet been touched by extensive construction. This is Kadırga (Galley) Cove. The cove takes its name from Ottoman times when the galleys of the Sultan's navy pulled into this cove. The first beach that was awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness in the region is this cove. The cove is an open beach with its hinterland covered with olive trees. The hotels in here are generally environmentally friendly, in harmony with the local architecture and for all are surrounded by olive trees. By getting to the Kadırga Cove you have entered borders of the township of Küçükkuyu.
