Canakkale Airport was opened 10 years ago with the regular flights of Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Ankara. Between 1997 and 1999, Dardanel Air was launched and start operating between Canakkale - Istanbul, and Canakkale – Ankara. However due to insufficient passenger numbers, both companies stop their flights and Canakkale Airport was left empty in the past 6 years. Canakkale Deputy, Ibrahim KOSDERE, told they are working on reactivating the flights in Canakkale Airport, doing so; he has contacted with the Vice General Manager of State Airports Directorship, Mr Orhan BIRDAL. Mr Kosdere added that with the current technical and technological infrastructure, there would be no further investments for the flights of RJ-100 with 99 passenger capacity. Mr Kosdere told that in the beginning it is aimed to activate the Canakkale Airport with the current conditions and later further investments would be considered later in order to increase the capacity. Mr Kosdere stated that they would contact with the private flight companies such Atlas Jet, Onur Air and so on and would invite them to operate in Canakkale.
