The president of Canakkale Trade and Industry Chamber, Ilhami TEZCAN, told that in order to improve the tourism potential of Canakkale, the Canakkale Airport should be suiatble for large size planes. Mr TEZCAN stressed the importance of therenovation of the Canakkale Airport in order to accomodate large size planes. Canakkale Airport was opened 10 years ago with the regular flights of Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Ankara. Between 1997 and 1999, Dardanel Air was launched and start operating between Canakkale - Istanbul, and Canakkale – Ankara. However due to insufficient passenger numbers, both companies stop their flights and Canakkale Airport was left empty in the past 7 years. Mr TEZCAN added that one of the most critical issues with regards to the problems of Canakkale could be considered as transportation and, Canakkale Airport could be considered as one of the top issues in the transportation problem. Mr TEZCAN told that with the renovation of the Canakkale Airport, the national and international tourist numbers visiting Canakkale would increase dramatically.
