The name of Canakkale was emerged with the common pottery art of the city in the old times. Nowadays, the importance of the pottery art in Canakkale has been reduced and come nearly to end. It is told that with the emergence of the plastic plates and pots, the importance of the pottery art was diminished day by day. Ismail Butun ( 68 years old), one of the oldest pottery artists of Canakkale, told that in the 1950s there were several ceramic workshops and owens in Canakkale particularly in the district near the 18 March Stadium. Mr Butun continued that, In 1967 the ceramic workshps and owens were moved to the out of Canakkale, to the disctrict which is so called Ataturk Street in these days. After the emergence of plastic plate and pots, the importance of the pottery art was diminished dramatically. Mr Butun told that nowadays due to no new pottery professionals, very few of pottery workshops are struglling to survive. Mr Butun stated that it is important to support the the pottery art in order to protect the historical values of Canakkale. Mr Ismail Butun is still performing his pottery art in the Yali Caravanserai and he is still ambitious to keep alive pottery art in Canakkale. Mr Butun stated that he is very happy with in the interest of the people to his valueable pottery art works and he states that he would be glad to assist everyone in the city to open new pottery art workshops
